What is MGO? (Methylglyoxal)

We all have product preferences, and one such is for Manuka Honey. Often found in health food stores and organic grocers, Manuka honey is an extraordinary product that contains a potent compound called methylglyoxal (MGO).

Manuka is a particularly rare type of honey - especially the high MGO grades - derived from the nectar collected by bees from the native Manuka flower in New Zealand. The rarity of this honey comes from the exceptionally short flowering season of this particular flower, which is only 2 - 6 weeks every year in the summer.

As with all things in life, not all Manuka honey is created equal and as such MGO levels can vary greatly. All of theHoneyman Manuka honey is tested and certified for MGO content to ensure the highest quality. The higher the MGO number, the more potent the properties of the honey.

Every step of theHoneyman’s processes are carried out in controlled and government certified environments, as well as being independently laboratory tested to ensure the MGO levels are truly as per the label.

Manuka Honey is one of the most nutrient-packed foods in the world due to its high concentrations of antioxidants. It also contains a unique range of oligosaccharides and prebiotics, amino acids, polyphenolic and other plant-derived compounds.

Its unique composition and antimicrobial properties make it an excellent natural ingredient for skin care, helping provide a wide range of benefits for your face and body.

We suggest consuming 1-3 spoonfuls per day to aid in overall wellness.

UMF and MGO are the two most widely used grading systems of Manuka Honey. At The Honeyman, we use the MGO scoring system due to its reliability and accuracy.

Analytica Laboratories are part of the MPI Recognised Laboratory Programme, meaning their testing of honey is used to verify the quality of honey being exported from New Zealand.
